500 million plastic bags are used worldwide every year, and only 3 percent get recycled. None biodegrade. This has fueled Lou’s Upcycles current artistic mission. The owner, operator, designer and artist at Lou’s Upcycles would actually like to be put out of business. She’d like people to stop using plastic bags and packaging so she wouldn’t have the material she needs for her creations. An activist who’s always been conscious of taking care of the environment, Leelyn supports local agriculture and new ideas for better energy, all while creating upcycled creations. All of her “upcycles” are made from unrecyclable plastic bags and wrappers that are turned into a sewable fabric. Using heat and pressure in a process called “fusing”, Lou is able to create her own textile which she then turns into wearable art.
